Trumpie defenders here. If you simply read the speech off a piece of paper, not in the context of the disinformation campaign of the prior 2 mths, or of the speeches that preceded it, or watching Trump actually deliver the speech start to finish, the defenders have a point, and definitely preview what the defense will look like.
IMO, with more than a month passing since the dimwit coup itself, emotions will be less raw, and those legalistic arguments will be more effective than they'd have been a month ago in the direct wake of this. So anyway, I agree, this is the bullseye of an impeachable offense, and I am no fan of impeachment, but individual lawmakers looking out for their own interests (more ideally, their constituents' interests) horsetrading to get to compromises - that's exactly how it is supposed to work.
I understand your point though - this is about doubling down on democracy, and we should all be aligned on that front.
